Pull Tag Scoring

Color Coding

The Rainbow color coding system uses color and shape to identify finish tags by age group. Each age group has been assigned a color in either square or oval stickers. The square stickers are assigned to males; oval stickers, females. The front of the color coding kit envelope lists the age groups of both male and female, the color of sticker assigned and how many stickers are enclosed for those groups.

The amount of stickers for each age group has been determined based on a national average. Typically, there are 35-40% female and 60-65% male. Participation is usually heaviest in the 20-50 age group. This kit contains anywhere from 150-200% more stickers than participants to take into account any differences between our charts and your actual event. IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU FOLLOW THE LIST. If you change colors, you may run out of stickers in certain age groups.

When preparing race numbers for registration, entry forms should be divided by sex and age group. Runner information should be written or labeled on each race numbers pull tag. Color coding stickers are then affixed to the right hand edge of each pull tag in the printed boxes. Do one age group at a time. Enclosed in the kit are 4 age group award sheets. Use 2 of them to make a chart for workers preparing numbers for registration; the other 2 for results processing. These may be photocopied or purchased from Rainbow Racing System® in pads of 50.

At the finish line, pull tags are collected in order of finish and spindled on stringers (pre numbered by order of use). These stringers are taken from the finish line to a results processing area in regular intervals. The results processing team, using the age group awards sheets, starts with the first stringer and fills in each age category as they flip through the tags, looking for colors and shapes of stickers. The age groups will fill quickly in the faster age groups. Write in winners under each category until all 3 spaces are filled in, then start looking for the colors you are still missing.

  • Have 2 finish chutes: one for males; one for females. This pre-divides the tags by gender
  • Pre-Mark stringers by chute number and order of use
  • Make sure volunteers collect tags face side down and spindle them that way
  • Use paper clips to mark age group winners so you can quickly double check your results
  • Using Rainbow Racing System®’s tag board results strip: staple tags to strips, write in finish times and post for finishers in award areas. Each participant can readily see how he or she finished overall and within the age group

In addition to using color coding stickers for scoring tags, they also work well with optional gear check tags separating bag storage by both color and number.

Barcode Scoring

barcode sample

Barcode scoring utilizes a barcode label which is attached to the pull tag prior to the event. The barcode corresponds with the bib number of the participant. That in turn corresponds with the participants vital scoring information, (such as name, age, sex, etc.) which has been entered into a computer data base. Just as in the manual pulltag scoring procedure, the barcoded tags are collected and scanned in order of finish. Finish times are then assigned either manually or through a link with a timing machine. Many software programs and barcode readers are available.

Please refer to our Timing and Labels sections for barcode scoring products and options.

Chip Timing

Transponder timing (also called chip timing or RFID timing) is a technique for measuring performance in sport events. A transponder working on a radio-frequency identification (RFID) basis is attached to the athlete and emits a unique code that is detected by radio receivers located at the strategic points in an event.

The most common transponders come in two types. One is worn on the shoe, one is worn on the race number. The first type, commonly called the “D” tag, is affixed to the race number for registration purposes and then removed by the participant prior to the event and looped through the shoe laces of one of his/her shoes. The actual transponder is located inside of the loop.

The second, commonly called the “B” tag, is affixed directly to the back of the race number prior to registration and is worn that way during the event.

Either type works well with Rainbow race numbers. For more information on chip timing technology and various suppliers click here.
