Introducing a new line of tear and water resistant race bibs printed on a biodegradable paper laminate. Rainbow Racing System’s Tough enough™ race bibs are made of paper with an inner layer of plastic providing the needed durability of synthetic papers such as Tyvek. The durable inner film in the paper laminate is biodegradable. The paper is produced using Forest Stewardship Council certified papers and bonded with solventless adhesives. The plastic laminate will begin degradation in 24 months. After the 2 year programmed life cycle the film begins to break down into microscopic pieces which are then naturally consumed by micro-organisms. This occurs without the release of toxic products or any negative influence on the environment. This film degrades anywhere in the presence of oxygen.

Tough enough™ race bibs are as durable as bibs made on synthetic paper because they are made with an inner layer of plastic film.
3: Are Tough enough™ race bibs water resistant?
Tough enough™ race bibs are made with uncoated papers that have wet strength that offers protection against moisture. In addition, the inner layer of film offers comparable moisture barrier to synthetic papers.
4: Is the paper Tough enough™ race bibs are printed on biodegradable?
Yes, the durable inner film used in producing the paper Tough enough™ race bibs are printed on is biodegradable. The inner film will begin degradation in 24 months where oxygen is present.
5: Can oxygen degrade plastic?
Yes, this technology consists of the addition of a special additive to the polymer which allows for a controlled two step degradation/biodegradation. After the 2 year programmed life cycle the film begins to break down into microscopic pieces which are then naturally consumed by micro-organisms. This occurs without the release of toxic products or any negative influence on the environment. This film degrades anywhere in the presence of oxygen.
6: How fast will the plastic degrade?
The additive has been developed to give a controlled shelf life of approximately 24 months.
7: How does it work?
A very small amount of pro-degradant additive is put into the manufacturing process. This breaks the molecular chains in the polymer, and at the end of its useful life the product falls apart. The plastic does not just fragment, but will be consumed by bacteria and fungi after the additive has reduced the molecular weight to a level which permits micro-organisms access to the carbon and hydrogen. It is therefore “biodegradable”.
8: Where will the paper Tough enough™ races bibs are made from degrade?
The paper Tough enough™ race bibs are made from will degrade on land (in landfills) as well as in the ocean, ponds and streams and will act an insurance policy for the environment in the control of litter.
9: Are Tough enough™ races bibs recyclable?
While the biodegradable plastic can be recycled as part of the normal plastic waste stream during its life cycle, the separation of plastic from paper isn’t achievable at the recycling center and is necessary for recycling. It would not be effective to recycle the paper that Tough enough™ race bibs are made of until the degradation of the plastic laminate has taken place. Disposing of the race bibs is an environmentally viable alternative to recycling because they will naturally biodegrade in a landfill.
